Horse Trekking for Epiphany

trekking san galgano Twelve days after Christmas, here in Italy we celebrate great journeys - either the travels of the Befana from folklore or the movements of the biblical Three Kings - so it seemed fitting to organize a two-day horse riding event, not to mention doing it for the chance to have some fun during the last days of our holidays!

As a result, Simone accompanied a group of riders from CM Equitazione run by Miriano Manciati as they crossed our metal hills - Colline Metallifere - on a 2-day ride from Massa Marittima (province on Grosseto) to the Abbey of San Galgano (province of Siena).

When we all got together at the meeting point, the sky was cloudy and grey. As soon as everyone was mounted and ready to depart, the rain started falling... and didn't stop for the entire day. If it had been another group, perhaps the morale would have been quite low. However this particular group was prepared to see the experience through to the end, showing an admirable spirit of adventure and a passion for their sport. They each had a smile on their lips and a joke at the ready despite having every item of clothing soaked through to the skin.

In the evening, the horses were relaxing in their stalls and enjoying their dinner while our riders went to Gerfalco to the restaurant "da Motosega" for an evening of good food and some live music. We ate, we sang and we danced the night away.

Monday morning the sun rose, promising a great day so dressed in their dry clothes, the group set off again to follow the trails from Montieri to San Galgano. It couldn't have been a more beautiful January day; a perfectly blue sky and warming sun beating down on everyone as if nature wanted to reward the group for their perseverance the day before. The river was high due to the previous rain but other than some of the horses having to swim and a few wet saddle blankets, everything went adventurously well!

Once arrived at the Abbey, we took a few memorable photos and left the horses to rest while we went to visit the captivating sword in the stone and enjoyed the tasty food offered by Salendo Wine Bar.
